Mark G. Schlesser, 63, of rural Independence, died Sunday, March 4, 2018 at Gundersen Health System in La Crosse. Mark was born July 7, 1954 in Whitehall to Edward and Alvina (Halama) Schlesser. He graduated with an economics degree from UW-River Falls. His careers included the banking/loan, insurance, and transportation areas. Mark was a private person with strong convictions—he was clear in his beliefs, always fought for what he thought was right, and this was balanced with a trademark kindness and generosity. While fiercely independent, he made significant contributions to his work, and always had a large presence within his family. As an avid student of history and world affairs, he shared fond memories of backpacking across Europe during college, along with a trip made to Japan in the early 80’s. Mark’s dedication to his parents Ed and Alvina was unwavering, he played a key role in their ability to live out their lives on the farm they built and loved. Survivors include a brother, Jake Schlesser of Independence; a sister, Joan (Dale) Sosalla of Independence; four nephews, Walter (Marie) Schlesser of Dubuque, Iowa, Carl Schlesser of Minneapolis, Ed Schlesser of Independence and Robert (Carol) Sosalla of Park City Utah, a niece Polly (Tim) Berra of La Crosse, a great nephew Evan Berra and two great nieces, Ellie and Abby Berra. Mark was preceded in death by his parents and a sister-in-law, Judy Schlesser. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 10, 2018 at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Independence, with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. Friday, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., followed by a rosary, at Edison Funeral Home, Independence, and one hour prior to the Mass at the church on Saturday.
