Leona Slaby, 92, of Whitehall, passed away January 3, 2020, at Grandview Care Center in Blair. Leona was born on April 20, 1927 on the family farm in Wickham Valley in Independence to Frank and Angeline (Kokott) Koval. She married the love of her life, Andrew Slaby, on April 28, 1947 at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Independence. Leona and Andrew farmed in the Whitehall area. As time passed they enjoyed many years living at home overlooking the farm where they raised their three children. Andrew died on September 1, 2004 Leona worked as a cook in many settings throughout the years. Even after retirement Leona kept busy baking, cooking, making quilts, tending to her flowers and enjoying time with family. Leona is survived by her sons Richard Slaby of Olympia, Wash. and Kenneth (Carol) Slaby; daughter Susan (Rodney Moen) Slaby; three siblings, Marian Karasch, Frank (Mary Ann) Koval, and Angeline (Gus) Klimek; sister-in-law, Martha Bisek; six grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren. Leona was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 57 years, parents, brothers, Alosie, Clarence (Leora) Kowahl, and sister, Laurene Koval. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Thursday, January 9, at Edison Funeral Home, Independence, with a prayer service and rosary at 7:30 p.m. Private burial will be in the Lincoln Cemetery, Whitehall.
