VERONICA ANN WINBERG
INDEPENDENCE – Veronica Ann Winberg, 87, of Independence, died Saturday, November 21, 2009 at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse.
She was born June 28, 1922 in Hale Township, Trempealeau County, to Thomas J. and Melania (Sluga) Sylla. She married Claude G. Winberg on May 10, 1943 at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Independence. He died February 19, 2007.
Veronica was a bookkeeper at the Elk Creek Creamery for many years. She was a life-long member of SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, contributing her talents to the Altar and Rosary Society, Quilting group, and Funeral Dinner Committee. Veronica was an avid gardener and a wonderful homemaker. She loved cooking and baking for her family. Veronica enjoyed playing cards, taking walks, and playing with her grandchildren. She always put others first and her volunteer efforts continued until her last days. Married over 60 years to Claude, they enjoyed dancing, going for drives and being with their family.
Survivors include her four children, Janet (Peter) Knutson of Cape Coral, Fla., Thomas (Nancy) Winberg of La Crosse, William (Linda Vick) Winberg of Columbus, Wis. and Mary Lynn (Steven) Reeter of Parker, Colo.; a sister, Jean (Gene) Pieterick of Eau Claire, a brother, William (Roselyn) Sylla of Elmwood; seven grandchildren, Heidi (Christopher) Green of Madison, Krista (Steven) Schaaf of St. Paul, Yolanda Winberg of Seattle, WA, Erika and Elizabeth Winberg both of La Crosse and Amanda and Faith Reeter of Parker, Colo.; four great-grandchildren, Evan and Lily Schaaf, Emma and Peter Green.
Veronica was preceded in death by her husband; four brothers, Leonard, Albert, Ralph, and Gerald Sylla; two sisters, Florence Sylla and Marian Smick; two grandsons, Brett and Alec Reeter.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 28, 2009 at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Independence, with Rev. David C. Kunz officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday and 8-10 a.m. Saturday at Edison Funeral Home, Independence, where there will be a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Friday, followed by a rosary.
Veronica’s family would like to express their utmost appreciation to the staff of Gundersen Lutheran Hospice and Hillview Nursing Home for the extraordinary care they provided Veronica in her final days.
