On Sunday September 4, 2016, exactly 96 years after coming into this world, Agnes “Ahgie” Johnson of Independence slipped the surly bonds of her earthly existence to join family and friends who have gone before her.
Ahgie was born on September 4th, 1920, the third of five children of Roy and Helen (Sobotta) Lyga. She married Robert H. Johnson on November 10, 1941, at S.S. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Independence, Wisconsin. He died June14, 1970.
She enjoyed working as a receptionist for Dr. C.F. Meyer in Independence, but her most important “work” was raising her family and being a wonderful, fun aunt to her many nieces and nephews.
Ahgie was a life-long member of S.S. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. She was a member of the “Church Basement Ladies” and other church groups, the American Legion Auxiliary, and volunteered as a Cub Scout den mother. She especially enjoyed going to coffee with the girls on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at Carolyn’s Coffee Pot. Ahgie liked to sew, shop, make quilts, shop, read, shop, bake cookies, shop, crochet, and shop. Her true passion (beside her family) was shopping at Younkers and Macys. She always wanted to know if it was “time to go to Younkers.”
Ahgie is survived by her four children Robert Johnson, Athens, Ga., Penelope Charbonneau, Eau Claire, Stephen (Candy) Johnson, Eau Claire, and Mary (Mike) Huberty, Eden Valley, Minn.; eight grandchildren Paul Johnson, Laura Johnson, Matt (India) Johnson, Lesley (David) Wiese, and Mark Johnson, Greg Huberty and Beth (Josh) Linn, and Megan Johnson; great-granddaughter Mia Clare Linn; special niece, Katie Lee; special nephew, Greg Helgeson; brother-in-law, Ralph Sobota; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob; her parents; brothers, Marcel and Edmund Lyga; and sisters, Rita Helgeson and Theresa “TC” Sobota.
Ahgie loved being a grandmother and it warmed her heart to spend time with her grandchildren and great-granddaughter.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, September 10, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at S.S. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Independence, with Rev. Woodrow H. Pace officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. Friday, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. followed by a rosary, at Edison Funeral Home, Independence, and one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to S.S. Peter and Paul Church Restoration Fund or S.S. Peter and Paul Catholic School.
The family would like to thank the staff of Dove Healthcare West and St. Croix Hospice for the kindness and friendship they showed Ahgie while she was in their care.
High Flight by John Gillespie Magee, Jr. September 3, 1941
Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds, -- and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of – wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there,
I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air . . .
Up, up the long, delirious burning blue
I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or ever eagle flew—
And, while with silent, lifting mind I’ve trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.
