Joe Matchey, 47, of Strum, Wis. died unexpectedly on Wednesday, October 21, 2015 in Madison Wis.
He was born to Broney and Jane (Longmier) Matchey on February 4, 1968, in Whitehall, Wis.
Joe grew up in Independence, Wis., graduating from Independence High School in 1986 and went on to graduate from UW-Madison in 1991 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering. He started his career as a consulting engineer at Level One in Rice Lake, then transistioned to the concrete paving industry working for James Cape & Sons, PCI Roads and finally Trierweiler Companies. Joe had many great friends and connections throughout the concrete paving industry.
Joe was an avid outdoorsman and loved hunting and fishing and especially duck hunting with his father and his children. He was glad to be back at it this fall after missing the 2014 season due to a significant injury. Fly fishing and fly tying, biking and photography were all activities he enjoyed.
Most of all, Joe enjoyed being a dad to his two wonderful children. Joe, Jake and Anna loved to go hunting, fishing, mountain biking, road biking and kayaking/canoeing together.
Joe cheered on both kids at numerous football, volleyball and basketball games. He will be deeply missed by his children.
Joe was an active member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Independence, Wis. and was seen most Saturdays at Mass ushering with his father and son, and sometimes his daughter.
Survivors include his son, Jake and daughter, Anna both of Strum; parents, Broney and Jane Matchey of Independence; sister, Clare (Chad) Semling of Eau Claire and two nephews, Hayden and Ethan Semling of Eau Claire.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 26, 2015 at SS. Peter & Paul Catholic School Gymnasium with Very Rev. Woodrow H. Pace officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. Sunday, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. followed by a rosary, at Edison Funeral Home, Independence, and one hour prior to services at the school on Monday.
